Abstract. For the first time, changes in the species richness of orthopteran insects across the steppe ecosystems of the Kulunda Plain in the late 20th – early 21st centuries were characterized by analyzing data from three model test sites. It was shown that these variations are not unidirectional and have a wave-like character. It has been demonstrated that the stable part of the species complex found at each model test site is formed by abundant representatives of the order, primarily acridids, which are typically among the main potential pests. The hypothesis has been formulated that the rises and falls in the number of species identified in each site are largely determined by differences in long-term dynamics of local populations of rare species, including those prefer habitats located near flat interfluves.
Key words: steppes, biodiversity, Orthoptera, rare species.
